I was just discussing with my boss at MDiTV about getting a second monitor today! I gave him this link to help my case. Our two programmers each have four monitors. You would think its overkill but they find a way to use each one :)

If you are not running multiple VM machines in unity dual full screen mode, you are not working efficiently.

I haven't tried three, but I've wanted to. I'm not the biggest fan of
spaces, or maybe I just don't get how to use it.

I also use multiple monitors. Two is plenty in my world, I've tried three and I always end up ignoring one altogether. When you add in spaces in OSX, two monitors is pretty much infinite IMO.

The 30 inch? Now I'm jealous.

I've always said there are 3 things any employer should provide for you at your request, or you should find another job.

1) A 2nd monitor so you can multitask with ease. The bigger the better.
2) A comfy chair so you can work late and not have backaches
3) Noise-canceling headphones so distractions are at a minimum

As a manager, you can do all that for $500-$750. When you look at the productivity boost, it pays for itself after a couple months.

I've been using 2 monitors at work for well over a year. I was using a monitor and my laptop at first, but I got my boss on board and he ordered an additional wide screen monitor for all 3 of us in the department. Having multiple monitors definitely increases my productivity, and I can tell this most when we travel and have only our laptops, because I'm not nearly as efficient.

For software developers, especially web developers, multiple monitors is a requirement for efficiency. Monitors of a decent size are also beneficial.

Right now I'm trying to code while solely using the 15" display of my Macbook Pro. It's savage.

Great post. I use a 30" monitor at TechCrunch, and it works as two monitors, since there is so much space! I used to use two 24"s, but I feel like a 30" is easier for me to work with, since I don't have to go left to right so much.
