The advantages of a fan page are so clear! I think a lot of businesses are setting up personal pages and then making a fan page attached to that personal page. But that's also risky, even if you don't friend a lot of people from the personal page, because that page could still be deleted, and any related fan pages would go with it. I didn't know that you could make a fan page separate from a personal account. That is really important info!

Re: Fan Pages = Businesses / Personal Profiles = Persons

Great question! No, you don't have to have a personal page to create a fan
page (even though Facebook will ask you to create a personal page at every
step during the Fan Page registration). Sign out of Facebook and click on
"advertising" at the bottom of http://www.facebook.com and go through all
the steps without creating a new account. You will have to create an email
for that Fan Page, use one that isn't associated with any personal Facebook
account. Hopefully this helps :)

- Derek

Re: Fan Pages = Businesses / Personal Profiles = Persons

Hello,

Do you have to have a personal account to create a fan page? I attempted to setup a fan page for the company I work for, but when I signed up a personal account was automatically created. I only want a fan page, without any connection to a personal account but when I tried to deactivate the personal account, the fan page disappeared.

I look forward to hearing back from you. I guess what I need to know is if I have to have a personal account attached to a business fan page, or can the fan page be created and maintained without being attached to some type of personal account?

Thanks!

Amy

Re: Fan Pages = Businesses / Personal Profiles = Persons

Hey Gillian, great to hear you are making the switch over to a fan page. How many friends do you have on your page?

In regards to applications, in my mind I think what Facebook offers in regards to features is all you need. If you find any really cool apps for a fan page, post them here for sure.

Re: Fan Pages = Businesses / Personal Profiles = Persons

I'm totally dealing with this right now. We started with a group page before fan pages were widely used and now we have to start all over with a fan page. Any tips on how to get our group members to become fans?

Also, what applications do you recommend to create better fan pages?

Re: Fan Pages = Businesses / Personal Profiles = Persons

Yea, good points. I'm almost at the point to "Report this Person", but I think I will just send them a link to this blog post. I have to make sure I don't piss off everyone I know.... hahaha

Re: Fan Pages = Businesses / Personal Profiles = Persons

I totally agree. I frequently click "Report this Person" at the bottom of business Facebook profiles that are on personal profiles just because I get tired of being requested by them. If you are serious about representing your business and brand on Facebook, you should have done enough research to learn the advantages of a fan page and create one.

Re: Fan Pages = Businesses / Personal Profiles = Persons

Great point Matt, thanks for pointing that out!

Re: Fan Pages = Businesses / Personal Profiles = Persons

Another point - Fan Pages show up on Google results just like a personal account can, but Facebook Groups do not.

Re: Fan Pages = Businesses / Personal Profiles = Persons

I was also told by @kelly_hansen from facebook that you can only have 5,000 friends on a personal profile. What really sucks is they can't transfer your friends to a fan page. Just start from the very beginning doing the right thing... it's much easier.
