This was, for a long time, the argument for women to wear heels all day while waitressing or at the office, despite back and knee injury. Because cultural values have shifted to caring about health a little more, it is now acceptable for women to wear flats and more comfortable shoes (see Danksos, a clog that's become increasingly popular among those who spend all day on their feet like nurses, waitresses, etc.).

For first impressions (I'm assuming the euphemism is for interviews), sure, bring a briefcase. But for all the businessmen you see around Bellingham, who are going to their jobs everyday, working with people who are hopefully judging them based off their value to the company and not how they look, a more health-conscious choice seems to be the only one that makes sense.

Now, I think the laptop/backpack market needs to experience the same transformation the shoe industry went through, and come out with some more professionally-accepted bags that look good without wrecking people's backs. After all, wearing a suit makes one look good without compromising one's health.

Re: Grow up and buy a briefcase

Since a lot of people tend to carry laptops now, I would suggest a messenger bag. It's simple to carry in your hand when you're wearing a suit jacket, and you can throw it over your shoulder when it's more casual... That's the way people tend to do it at Spring Creek Group.

Re: Grow up and buy a briefcase

I agree. The "business in the front, camp-out in the back" look has got to go!

Re: Grow up and buy a briefcase

We are super casual at the ZooLoo office, and Arizona is pretty casual in general (unless you're a lawyer). Business casual usually consists of something you might wear on the golf course. However, I agree that first impressions are vital and that new graduates should lose the flip flops and get some more professional gear for at least the interview process.

I would highly recommend that you do your research before wearing a suit and tie to an interview though. For instance, if you interviewed for a programming or design position here at ZooLoo, you'd be pelted with nerf bullets if you showed up in a tie :)
